FAQ's

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is full of Scottish cultural experiences that range from Clan tents, Dance competitions, musical expression and more! There is even an entire day dedicated to families! I'm sure you have questions, and we have answers. Please check our FAQs below.

Ticketing FAQs

What is your ticketing refund policy?

GMHG policy is no refunds and sales are not transferable. Please contact [email protected] if you wish to transfer your sale.

Will tickets be sold at the entrance?

Tickets can be purchased at the GMHG office in Linville with cash, check, money order or credit card (Master Card, Visa, American Express and Discover) during the month of June.

Tickets can also be purchased during the games at the gates. Special 4-day Advance discounted tickets (For events on MacRae Meadows ONLY!) are available through advance order only.

Can I purchase tickets day of?

You may purchase tickets day of on the field with cash or credit. Please be advised that you WILL have to shuttle up during day events.

Can I use my email address for all the tickets I purchase?

You can use the same email address for each purchase. Tickets will be mailed to the address used on the purchase form.

How do I get my tickets?

Please note that GMHG will mail out all tickets purchased online to the physical address listed for each registrant in May or June. Please be sure that you list the correct physical address and double check the entry especially if you use auto fill. If there is an address change, you will need to email [email protected]

General FAQs

Are pets allowed at the GMHG?

While we allow certified, ADA service animals, we do not allow pets on the Meadow due to our lease with the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation.

Can I bring my dog?

Service Animals ONLY. We follow all ADA guidelines.

Can we utilize golf carts to move around the field?

GMHG provides golf cart shuttles for those who need it. We do not allow outside ATVs/Golf Carts. We also do not rent ours out for personal use. Should you need to use one for mobility reasons or other, simply locate GMHG personnel, and someone will get to you ASAP.

What can we bring with us to the games?

You are welcome to bring chairs, picnic baskets, blankets, coolers etc. We simply ask that you do not bring anything that would obstruct the view for others like a pop up canopy or tent. Your personal or rented Golf carts are also not allowed.

Where is the closest lodging accommodation?

The closest lodging The Best Western in Banner Elk. If you are interested in a town with more dining options, then Boone may be more to your liking.

How much is the shuttle?

Shuttle prices are cash only and are $10 for ages 13+ and $5 for ages 5-12. Ages 4 and under are free.

Are there food vendors or do I have to pack a picnic?

We have a variety of vendors (Burgers. Hotdogs. Barbeque. Turkey legs. American Scottish Haggis. Etc), but you are welcome to pack a picnic as well. Alcoholic beverages MUST be consumed discreetly.

Is there seating?

There is limited seating around the track. You are welcome to bring your own folding/camping chair. You may NOT put up your own pop-up canopy as this will obstruct the view for others. Small umbrellas are permitted.

What should I wear?

Layers are recommended. Prepare for sunshine and rain, as well as varying temps.

How do I leave the games quickly and efficiently?

In order to help lighten the traffic congestion as folks exit the games we have some tips!

If you are exiting via Gate 2, please turn right on to 221 South toward Linville.
If you are exiting via Gate 3, please turn left on to US 221 NORTH toward the Blue Ridge Parkway. Take the Blue Ridge Parkway south, then turn right on to Roseboro Road.

Patron Package FAQs

What is included in the Patron Package?

You can find details about the Patron packages here on our Patron Package webpage.

How do I purchase a Patron Package and make a camping reservation.

Please choose Patron Package for your ticket option. You will have the option to choose the Patron package you desire. Upon completion, you will receive an email confirmation.

Do Chieftain Packages sell out?

The Chieftain is one of our more popular packages and they are limited. We have no way of determining exactly when they will sell out, but once we hit that number we suspend further sales.

Can you tell us more about the Hospitality Tent?

The Hospitality Tent is located directly next to the Review Stand and offers an exclusive, covered area in which to view competitions in the middle of the field. Light snacks and beverages are provided. You are welcome to pack a picnic/cooler if you so wish.

Camping FAQs

You will find most of the information you need on our camping page.

Where and when do I check in for Camping?

You will need to check in at Camping Registration upon arrival.

Do campers need a shuttle pass?

Do not need a shuttle pass. Camping area is located right on/next to the meadow.

Where is parking for campers?

Parking is located directly next to camping areas, or at "Jasper". Should they be located at Jasper Parking, there is a designated Campers Shuttle which will transport them from their vehicle to the camping drop off point.

*Campers may drop off their stuff at the camping location before parking.

Any tips for campers at GMHG preparation?

*There are water and power hookups, but limited. Everyone shares. Bring a hose and extension cord.

*There are showers. Hot water in the showers usually runs out by lunch so plan accordingly.

*Port-o-johns are located throughout the meadow.

*If unsure of anything, ask you neighbor. Our campers are seasoned Pros.

Can I keep my vehicle next to my tent? I like to lock up valuables and my cooler.

Parking for Camping is in one of two areas, neither directly next to tent. They will give you directions at camping registration upon check-in.

Can we have a bike even if not in the festival area? If we can't ride it, can it still be attached to my vehicle or should I just leave it at home?

You can leave it on your car if you'd like, but you may not ride it within the Meadow or Campground.

If we can't keep our vehicle next to us, how far away will it be? Walking distance?

Distance depends upon arrival and camping spot.

Do we have assigned spots?

First-come first-serve basis. You will have a spot as per your reservation, but where that spot is depends on when you arrive.

Do we pay each time we access our vehicle?

You will not have to pay to access your car.

If we can't park next to our tent, how can we get food and water? Do we haul it up from our vehicle? Do you provide waggon or should I bring one?

Personnel will allow you to unload your car as close as possible, however after unloading you must move to parking areas or you will be towed.

Are there places to charge electronics?

We do have power hookups. They are limited and everyone shares. For more details visit the camping page: gmhg.org/camping

Showers? Restrooms?

These are provided in the campground area. Ask for directions upon check-in.

Are we camping in the main Grandfather mountain campground and should I go there for answers or is this an open field?

Camping for the Games is on the Meadow and directly across the road from the field. 2 miles up from the 105/221 Intersection. MacRae Meadows US 221 Linville, NC 28646
